The method and results of a sample survey among the 50,000 school children of Lucknow are presented. It has been found that one in every thirty school child requires special attention from the point of view of hearing. This is a considerable amount and works to a total of one thousand six hundred and fifty children in the schools of Lucknow. Wax, Nasopharyngeal infection and Middle ear disease were found to be the most common causes of deafness. The social and preventive aspects of the problem are discussed and ways and means, are suggested to overcome those neglected aspects of hygiene in school children which affect their status of hearing.en_US
