Effect of Hormonal Influence during Menstrual Cycle on Immittance Findings

Abstract

The present study was aimed to study the effect of hormonal influence on the various parameters of immittance measurement. Fifteen female subjects in the age range of 18-25 years (mean age = 21.5 years) with normal menstrual cycle participated in the study. All the participants were tested at three different phases during a single menstrual cycle. The data were obtained for static compliance, tympanometric peak pressure , type of tympanogram, acoustic reflex threshold (ipsi and contra), resonant frequency , and multicomponent BIG pattern . In tympanometry, the tympanometric peak pressure showed slightly higher values during the luteal phase and lowest during the mid cycle. But static compliance and tympanometric peak pressure showed almost similar values across all the three phases of the menstrual cycle. In ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds statistically significant difference was obtained at three frequencies (500, 1000 and 2000Hz) except at 4000Hz. The results showed significant difference between menstrual phase and luteal phase which could be attributed to the different level of estrogen and progesterone. There was no significant difference across the three phases in case of resonant frequency and delta theta .
